Carmarthen School of Art has been providing Art education since 1854, being one of the first Art Schools set up in Britain following the Great Exhibition in Crystal Palace in London. The School has been continually evolving ever since, responding to social, creative and cultural developments and the changing needs of its students, industry and wider community. Our heritage is important to us and influences our School ethos.

Connected.

We are rural, being in one of the most beautiful counties in Wales yet we are well connected within the world of art and design; connected regionally, nationally and internationally through live projects, events, competitions, educational visits, alumni and industry links. Our Art and Design degrees are validated by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

Lucky Pencil Art Shop.

The Lucky Pencil Art Shop is an integral part of our art school and resource for our students. Situated in Carmarthen School of Art at Coleg Sir Gar’s Jobs Well Road Campus. The art shop stocks a broad variety of high quality specialist art, craft and design materials suitable for a wide range of applications, from pencils, charcoal, sketchbooks, paper in a selection of weights, to acrylic, oil and water-colour paints for the fine artists, to tools for the ceramicist, sculptor and Jeweller and much, much more!

Our Courses.

BA (HONS) 3D DESIGN & ANIMATION

3D Design & Animation is a programme that has developed from the emergent technologies of a continually evolving creative industry. Students will explore innovative and modernistic ideas whilst gaining blended skills in art, design and technology. There will be a focus on the capture, creation and output of 3D digital models and environments, with particular focus on Virtual Reality platforms.

BA (HONS) MULTIDISCIPLINARY IN ART & DESIGN

This course gives you the opportunity to develop a multi-faceted and bespoke programme of study by selecting a combination of modules from two of our specialist degrees. You will work across different platforms, generating dynamic and innovative practice addressing personal interests and preparing you for future professional ambitions.

BA (HONS) CERAMICS

This challenging and exciting programme gives you the opportunity to develop skills within ceramic process, design and making. The focus is on learning through making and as you develop knowledge, skills and individual interests you can elect to specialise in a specific area of ceramics or develop work across a range of ceramic skills. 

BA (HONS) CONCEPT ART & ILLUSTRATION

This exciting new course explores traditional and alternative approaches to concept art & Illustration. Building on the core fundamentals of figurative drawing, perspective, composition & lighting, you will master and apply the latest techniques used by today's top concept artists and illustrators.

If you are interested in character concept design, environment design, illustration and promo art within the film, game and creative industries, then this course is perfect for you.

BA (HONS) FASHION DESIGN

This programme develops your abilities and confidence in designing and constructing fashion garments through hands-on experience. Traditional and current technologies are applied to foster the development of individual design identity, ensuring that you develop a portfolio of fashion design work relevant to current industry needs.

BA (HONS) FINE ART PRACTICE

The Fine Art Practice Degree programme is unique within Wales due to the bespoke foundry and dedicated print studio facilities. The course has an emphasis on experimentation in an exciting studio environment supported by specialist workshops; exploring the past to inform contemporary practice.

BA (HONS) JEWELLERY DESIGN

This is the only stand alone jewellery degree course in Wales and its structure focuses on practical, hands-on workshop sessions, delivered to small groups in well equipped workshop spaces. Cultural developments and innovative applications of methods to materials have always been at the heart of jewellery making and students on this course will be challenged and encouraged to apply innovative and creative thinking to a range of materials, using both traditional making processes and new advancements in technology.

BA (HONS) PHOTOGRAPHY

This degree programme offers a fresh perspective into the exciting profession of photography. You will explore a diverse range of genres from documentary to wildlife photography, developing your skills and passions; culminating in a distinct, individualistic portfolio appropriate for your professional ambitions.

BA (HONS) TEXTILES

This unique programme focusses on weaving, knitting and mixed media as specialist areas within textile design. Drawing and digital processes provide a springboard for ideas whilst the emphasis on skills generates knowledge and confidence for you to develop individuality in preparation for a textile career.

CERT HE COURSES

A recent addition to our portfolio of university level programmes is the Certificate of Higher Education.

This Level 4 stand alone qualification is basically the first year of our Degree Programmes. The course will enable those students who are unable to commit to studying for a full BA Honours degree to have an understanding of, and learn the basic skills required in their chosen subject.

FOUNDATION STUDIES IN ART, DESIGN & MEDIA

Established in 1965, this course has a national reputation for excellence with many graduates now working at the top of their field. Workshops, studio practice and lectures take place across the art school offering you the opportunity to experiment and develop skills and understanding of the full range of art and design specialisms to inform future progression.

ACCESS TO HE ART & DESIGN

This level 3 programme gives students the opportunity to pursue art and design in exploratory, investigative and experimental ways. The course is designed for students who may not have gained any previous formal qualifications but are able to demonstrate an enthusiasm for and commitment to art and design.

ART & DESIGN (POST GCSE)

Our courses on the Pibwrlwyd campus give you the opportunity to acquire a grounding in the general principles and skills which underpin art, design and craft. The courses have a practical focus across art and design and fashion and provide you with progression opportunities on to the next level of study or employment.

CREATIVE DIGITAL PRACTICE LEVEL 3

This course provides an ideal opportunity for those students interested in the digital visual arts to explore, develop and expand their creative passion within a qualification structure that is stimulating and demanding and helps provide a supportive transition from further to higher education.

CRIW CELF

Criw Celf is an Arts Council of Wales project bringing together more able and talented students in the visual arts - with students ranging from ages 9-18. This is part of a national initiative to nurture young artistic talent in Wales. Working closely with schools, colleges and the local community, Criw Celf seeks to develop pupil’s creative practice and knowledge of the visual and applied arts through a series of masterclasses.

At Carmarthen School of Art @ Coleg Sir Gar we  deliver the following Criw Celf Projects: 

Portfolio is aimed at learners in school years 10 & 11 (GCSE)

Raising the Bar is aimed at learners in school years 12 & 13 (AS & A Level)

From September 2022 the Criw Celf West partnership has been given the opportunity to work with younger learners.

SHORT COURSES PROGRAMME

Short courses are suitable for beginners or those wishing to refresh existing skills, and for aged sixteen and above. Our short courses give you access to exceptionally well resourced studios and workshops with both traditional and cutting edge equipment. Courses will be delivered in the degree departments by departmental staff.
