I am a hand weaver based in Leith, Edinburgh and I established my weave company, PickOne in 1997. I produce pieces that are either one of a kind pieces or collections, made in small batches. My pieces are handwoven in any manner of natural materials including merino lambs wool, linen, cottolin and shetland yarn. All are produced for the apparel or interiors markets. As a sole trade I do occasionally enjoy the process of working on collaborative projects and my range of footstools are a winning example of this. Traditionally inspiration has come from the Scottish land and seascapes with more recent inspiration being drawn from overseas trips to India in 2019. Currently I'm looking at how I can sustain my creativity during these lockdown times by looking at the Japanese traditions of Saori and Zanshi/Zanshiori techniques whilst maintaining a quality that has come to be expected from the PickOne Studio. This line of thinking also feeds into the make do and mend philosophy which is conjuring up an interesting juxtaposition of materials that would not normally place together on a warp. I look forward to presenting the outcome of this more experimental approach at the Digital Craft Festival 2021..
