5 Great Reasons to Visit Craft Festival
Written: 15 April 2022
Dear Craft Festival Friend,
I hope this finds you well and looking forward to a break over Easter.
This week, Dr Nicola Thomas picks her 5 favourites. Nicola is Professor in Historical and Cultural Geography at the Department of Geography, University of Exeter.
Nicola says “Craft Festival is my happiest of places - I reconnect with makers who I already love, and then seek out new maker’s work to enjoy in the years ahead.”
Her research interrogates the ways in which geographical perspectives can help make sense of ‘craft’. This includes the relationships between places, materials and makers; the role of craft communities; the connections between craft and justice movements, and the embodied, material and social entanglements within craft.
Read on to discover Nicola's 5 Favourites. With over 200 exceptional makers to choose, do you have 5 Favourites? Take A Look Here.
I chatted with Nicola earlier in the year about her research on our podcast, The Capital of Craft. You can listen to our Craft Conversation, HERE.

Here are Nicola's 5 Favourites
Studio Arvor
I’m looking forward to meeting Studio Arvor in the Start Up area. I want to see how their Torus Coat Hooks might fit in my home and learn more about their environmental ethos.
By Raz Maker
I’ll be seeking out Raz/Maker - the brass spoon and scoop I bought last year are in daily use and I have my eye on a Salad Server set.
Sabine Nemet
The demonstration area of the Festival is so absorbing - I know I’ll be watching Sabine Nemet, I am so drawn to the warmth of their tableware and love seeing potters in action.
Maker Maker Shop
In the Making and Materials area of the Festival I’ll be heading to Maker Maker to enjoy Aneta and Rupert’s fizzy energy, fabrics, notions and new project inspiration.
Fran Buxton Mixed Media
I’m an archive and family memory addict. I love seeing Fran’s work with discarded objects using their skills of stitch and curation. I have a commission in mind and talking to Fran at the festival will be a first step
This year, we have more incredible makers than ever demonstrating their skills. 20 exceptional people will be talking and sharing their craft knowledge including woodcarving, printmaking, pottery, basket making, shoemaking, weaving, wood turning, furniture making and more.
